The West End Coalition
Group Inc. emerged in 1992 out of area residents
active in The Southern Leadership Christian Conference.
Uella Calhoun, West End Coalition Group's president,
and neighbors, armed with a grant from the
Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, organized to prevent
housing deterioration, blight and community destabilization
in Atlanta's West End area bounded on the South
by Lucille Avenue, Langhorn Street on the East,
Ralph David Albernathy to the West, and Laurel
Avenue and Interstate 20 on the North.
The West End Coalition Group is a center of activities
including Community Block Parties to meet new
residents, field trips for children, and parties
for major holidays. It is active with Morehouse
College and Neighborhood Planning U-T to stay
up to speed on what's new in neighborhood revitalization
and community development initiatives.
Uella Calhoun and other community residents were
active with the Southern Leadership Christian
Conference, meeting in the West Hills Presbyterian
Church in 1991, dealing with community problems
of alcohol, drugs and their consequences for area
residence.
